Make Your Next Event a Strawless One

Make Your Next Event a Strawless One

The “strawless” movement is in full swing. Major cities such as Seattle and Malibu have banned or limited the use of plastic straws. Restaurants across the country are voluntarily removing plastic straws from their businesses as well. Why? In America, we use over 500 million straws every day; most of them end up in the ocean.

It’s time for the events industry to join the movement. Event professionals have an opportunity to eliminate straws from the food and beverage portion of their programs. Communicate the importance of this with your venue or catering partner, and request that they leave the straws behind. Instead, give attendees reusable straws as a giveaway item, (pro tip: many cocktails taste better through a metal straw anyway!). Additionally, this presents an opportunity for showcasing your branding. Making this a win for your brand, and a win for the environment.

This green effort doesn’t have to stop at straws! Consider eliminating plastic utensils and stirrers from your program as well. Instead, provide attendees with portable, reusable cutlery sets (make sure to brand them!).

Still not convinced? Experts have predicted there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050. Eliminating disposable straws and other plastic utensils is a small step in the right direction.

What are some steps you’ve taken to making your events greener?
